16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging system supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will result in loss of life or great bodily damage.

Police said they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic gadgets that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College safety stays a high precedence for the division," police stated in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the varsity's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our normal apply, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual did not pose a right away risk to the Berkeley Excessive School neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the coed.
