16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive system supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can lead to loss of life or nice bodily injury.

Police said they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital items that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College security stays a high precedence for the division," police said in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case remains under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the varsity's community that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing threat to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our customary practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we were assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley High School community."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the coed.
