Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech large said its iconic music participant has been replaced by other units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "At present, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unimaginable music expertise throughout all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with support for spatial audio - there isn't any better method to enjoy, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 player that would maintain 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new class of digital music player that permits you to put your total music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he mentioned at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again."

Similar MP3 gamers released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success as the iPod.

Apple has released 5 versions of its music player - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent times, with cell phone technology enabling prospects to hearken to music companies on their telephones.

In 2014, the classic click wheel mannequin was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano have been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the only model nonetheless on sale in the present day.
