Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was released.

The US tech giant mentioned its iconic music participant has been changed by other units, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising and marketing, said: "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We have built-in an unimaginable music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with help for spatial audio - there is not any higher option to enjoy, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the primary MP3 participant that would hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music player that permits you to put your whole music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he said on the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the identical again."

Related MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success as the iPod.

Apple has launched five versions of its music participant - the Classic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod vary lately, with mobile phone technology enabling prospects to take heed to music services on their telephones.
