Throughout the Uvalde shooting, an off-duty federal agent’s wife texted him for help. “I asked my barber if he had a gun,” he said.

Jacob Albarado was in his barber's chair when each males received text messages in regards to the shooting unfolding at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, last week. "There's an lively shooter. Assist. Love you," Albarado's spouse Trisha stated in three messages at 11:41 a.m.

She's a fourth grade trainer at the faculty, and their daughter is a pupil there.

"I asked my barber if he had a gun," Albarado, a U.S. Customs and Border Safety agent, told CBS Information on Wednesday. He had attended an awards ceremony at the school earlier that morning and was off duty, together with his weapon at dwelling.

The barber did have a gun. Albarado took it, a shotgun, they usually rushed to the chaotic scene. Law enforcement officials had been already there, and Albarado started serving to.

"Kids are popping out the windows," he said.

"I was acting as a husband and a father," he stated.

"We have to get the youngsters out of here," Albarado mentioned he told the officers. "… The shooter's over there. We need to get the youngsters out. This is our time."

The officers started opening classroom doorways, and Albarado mentioned he guided people to security.

"First classroom, second classroom, third classroom, noticed my daughter," Albarado mentioned. "Reduction. Big aid."

He hugged and kissed her, and soon she was heading to the college parking lot.

While Border Patrol agents had been on the staff that breached the classroom where the gunman was holed up, Albarado wasn't in that group.

"I didn't have my gear, and so it would not have been a smart decision for me to get into the constructing," he said. "I didn't have my vest. A shotgun's not a adequate protection."

Throughout a press convention final week, the pinnacle of the Texas Division of Public Security said the varsity district's police chief did not initially ship officers into the classroom the place the gunman was located because he thought it was now not an active-shooter situation. For his part, Albarado stated he wasn't in a position to evaluate the response.
