Guardian with concealed weapon accidentally shoots self while at Arlington ISD school, police say

Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary College was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a father or mother with a hid weapon had his gun by accident go off, hitting the mother or father in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary College was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a dad or mum with a hid weapon had his gun by accident go off, hitting the mum or dad within the leg.

The school had early launch and college students have been launched at the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

According to police, the mother or father, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and by accident shot himself. His injury was not severe.

The college district mentioned White was contained in the building, close to the foyer space, and never within the hallway near students when the gun went off.

Police and college officers stated there was no risk made and the mother or father did not have "malicious intent."

No college students or staff have been injured. The parent was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones mentioned after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

Within the two days since the Uvalde mass school shooting, there have been 5 circumstances in North Texas associated to guns brought to colleges or threats made.

Arlington mother and father said their minds immediately thought of the worst once they had been notified.

No parent ever needs there to be a reason for them to get a text message saying their kid's school is on lockdown.

But since this week's lethal shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can not assist but suppose the worst when they do.

"After I acquired the text message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something is going to happen.’ I used to be shocked," parent Karima Rasheed mentioned.

Whereas most times, lockdowns are only drills students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, stated that figuring out what happened earlier this week made this lockdown different. 

"I started seeing my classmates beginning to cry and our teacher obtained a notification on their cellphone saying someone was within the constructing," he stated.

Weapons aren't allowed on school property, and parents FOX 4 spoke with stated even if it was a mistake, the timing is simply terrible.

"What are we going to do? They have to go to high school, and clearly, statistically, it is unlikely to occur, but you by no means want to be the one statistic. What if it's your kids?" Matthew Mitchell mentioned.

Mitchell lives across the road from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to another Arlington school. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve received twin six-year-olds that go to a unique Arlington college and every time I hear there's a lockdown or a college shooting, my coronary heart jumps into my throat," he said.

Rasheed stated Thursday was the graduation day for 6th grade college students at Duff Elementary.

While driving her son to school in the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever happened at his faculty.

"If one thing happened, you’ve received to run anyplace that’s secure and hide," she informed her baby.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is just too fresh to talk politics, Mitchell mentioned something must be done now. 

"They want to talk about it, they need to campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, however they don’t want to really go any laws and do anything," he added.
