Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten zügig den Wert einer nahmen Listung in den Serps und recht bald entwickelten sich Unternehmen, die sich auf die Optimierung qualifitierten. In den Anfängen passierte die Aufnahme oft bezüglich der Transfer der URL der jeweiligen Seite an die vielfältigen Suchmaschinen im Internet. Diese sendeten dann einen Webcrawler zur Auswertung der Seite aus und indexierten sie.[1] Der Webcrawler lud die Internetpräsenz auf den Web Server der Recherche, wo ein weiteres Angebot, der allgemein so benannte Indexer, Angaben herauslas und katalogisierte (genannte Wörter, Links zu anderweitigen Seiten). Die neuzeitlichen Varianten der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Infos, die durch die Webmaster eigenständig vorgegeben werden konnten, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Search Engines wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben eine Übersicht per Inhalt einer Seite, aber setzte sich bald herab, dass die Nutzung er Details nicht solide war, da die Wahl der verwendeten Schlagworte dank dem Webmaster eine ungenaue Vorführung des Seiteninhalts reflektieren vermochten. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in den Meta-Elementen konnten so irrelevante Websites bei besonderen Recherchieren listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller vielfältige Fähigkeiten in des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu lenken, dass die Seite überlegen in Resultaten gefunden wird.[3] Da die damaligen Suchmaschinen im Netz sehr auf Kriterien abhängig waren, die alleinig in Händen der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr labil für Straftat und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um vorteilhaftere und relevantere Testurteile in den Resultaten zu bekommen, mussten sich die Unternhemer der Internet Suchmaschinen an diese Faktoren adaptieren. Weil der Gewinn einer Suchmaschine davon anhängig ist, relevante Ergebnisse der Suchmaschine zu den gestellten Keywords anzuzeigen, konnten untaugliche Testergebnisse darin resultieren, dass sich die Benutzer nach sonstigen Varianten für die Suche im Web umsehen. Die Auflösung der Search Engines fortbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Rangfolge, die Merkmalen beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwer beherrschbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin generierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Urahn von Suchmaschinen – eine Recherche, die auf einem mathematischen Algorithmus basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Webseiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfließen ließ. Auch übrige Suchmaschinen im Internet orientiert zu Gesprächsaufhänger der Folgezeit die Verlinkungsstruktur bspw. in Form der Linkpopularität in ihre Algorithmen mit ein. Google
