Speaking within the dugout of the Nice American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler stated, "I don't plan on coming out for the anthem going forward till I really feel higher in regards to the direction of our nation."
In a blog post, Kapler questioned whether or not the nation's leadership is committed to representing its folks's best interests and whether the United States is actually "the land of the free and the home of the courageous.""We weren't given bravery, and we aren't free. Later, Kapler wrote about his disillusionment with what he known as "the shortage of supply of the promise of what our national anthem represents."
"I'm not okay with the state of this nation. I wish I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I wish that I may have demonstrated what I learned from my dad, that while you're dissatisfied together with your nation, you let it's known by protest. The house of the courageous should encourage this."
