16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school shooting that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive device supplies and threatening to commit a crime which will end in loss of life or nice bodily damage.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College safety remains a excessive precedence for the division," police stated in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our normal observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we were assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate menace to the Berkeley Excessive School group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the student.
